Heard and Overheard, volume 5

Rafe was tucking Anna Kate into her bed and said it was too late to read a book. AK was unhappy about this decision. Her prayer went like this, "Lord, help me to memorize all my lines for Kidz Praz. And help Dad to get a grip. And help me, Mom and Elle to get a grip. But help Dad to get the biggest grip. Amen."
Me,handing something to Elle: "Here ya go."
Elle: "You said ya. It's YOU....Old ladies say ya."
Anna Kate: "Dad, when you were little did you think 'cocoa' had an 'a' in it? I mean, that's so weird. Whoever made that up--Adam and Eve, God, or whoever--needs to wake up."
Elle, eyeing something in Target she wanted: "I don't have one of those. With an extra layer of don't."
Anna Kate, seeing an insignificant piece of schoolwork in the trash can: "Mom, I found this in the trash."
Me: "I can't keep EVERYTHING."
Anna Kate: (dramatically) "Yes you can. I believe in you." then trailing off, "but apparently you don't believe in yourself."Rafe, Elle and I were out to eat one day for lunch. She said something cute and I winked at her. She looked at Rafe and whispered, "Dad, why does Mom blink at me when she loves me?"
It was bedtime and I was trying to decide whether or not to let the girls finish the game they were playing instead of reading a bedtime story. Anna Kate says, "Mommy, why do you have to be so sensitive about what we do?"
Anna Kate: "When I get married, I'm going to buy all my furniture from Ivan Smith. 'Cause on the commercial it says it only looks expensive."
Anna Kate had been asleep in bed for several hours when I heard her talking in her sleep. I went in to check on her and she sat up, eyes closed, and mumbled "I...have....a....itch. Can't.........seem.....to know...how to get it off..."
Elle, in the car on the way home from church: "I wish I was sick because then Mommy would be sooooo sweet."
Rafe: Huh?
Anna Kate: Yeah, when we throw up and stuff, Mama always says extra sweet stuff.

Elle
, singing: "Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. Mary had a little lamb, and peace and quiet snow."

AK
: "MO-OM! Will you tell Elle to stop HANDLING my stuff!"

Elle: "Mom, can I have a granilla bar for breakfast?"

AK: "Oooh, Elle. Did you just bust a grumpy?"

Anna Kate: "Where's Dad?"
Me: "He's at church tonight."
Anna Kate: "Awww. He's never here. I haven't seen him all day."
Me: "Yes you have. He was here at breakfast and we saw him for an hour after school."
Anna Kate: "That wasn't him. That was his twin brother, Raphe-OLE." [said in a Spanish accent.]Elle: "Mom, did you know that people in my class say 'anyways' and they don't even know."
Me: "Know what?"
Elle: "That it's anyway."
Elle was at T-ball practice and fell while running to a base. She started to cry and I could tell it was going to be dramatic. So I went out there to get her and AK followed me. We dusted her off, and she was fine, but she kept crying. AK gave Elle her sweetest big sister consolations and finally Elle settled down. We started back to our seats, and as we were walking away, AK mumbles to herself, "Well that was rather uncalled for."
